Transformative Equitable, Innovative and Coordinated Actions of Information Literacy Towards Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria

Abstract

This paper examines how information literacy serves as a cornerstone for achieving sustainable development goals in Nigeria through transformative, equitable, innovative, and coordinated approaches. Information literacy empowers individuals to access, evaluate, and utilize information effectively, which is essential for addressing developmental challenges such as poverty, poor healthcare, inadequate education, and environmental degradation. The study adopts a quantitative research design, surveying 296 information professionals, lecturers and academic librarians across Nigerian academic institutions to assess their roles in promoting information literacy for sustainable development. The findings reveal that coordinated efforts by information professionals, lecturers, and academic librarians significantly contribute to SDG achievement through capacity building, digital literacy programs, community engagement, and curriculum integration. However, challenges including inadequate funding, limited technological infrastructure, poor policy implementation, insufficient training, and low awareness levels hinder these efforts. The study recommends strengthening institutional support, enhancing collaborative partnerships, increasing budgetary allocations, improving digital infrastructure, developing comprehensive training programs, integrating information literacy into national development frameworks, establishing monitoring mechanisms, and fostering community participation. These recommendations provide a roadmap for stakeholders to maximize information literacy’s potential in driving Nigeria’s sustainable development agenda
