About the Journal
Preamble
Women’s Economic Empowerment (KU-WEE) is a KU-WEE Hub journal. The hub was established through a grant from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to generate evidence on what works to advance Women’s Economic Empowerment in Kenya. The Kenyatta University Women’s Economic Empowerment (KU-WEE) Hub, aims to ensure that interested parties such as relevant authorities - ministries and departments, county governments, policy leaders, implementing agencies and donors utilize empirical evidence to implement and shape policies, programs, interventions and advocacy efforts related to supporting women’s economic empowerment (WEE). An important aspect in this Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation project is the research that is currently being undertaken on various thematic areas as well as developing partnerships with a diversity of stakeholders. There is a dearth of academic outlets for this kinds of research output in the region. This makes establishing a journal an appropriate endeavour because it will benefit a wide range of audience from the findings and new knowledge on women economic empowerment.
Rationale
Economic empowerment is the capacity of women and men to participate in, contribute to and benefit from growth processes in ways which recognize the value of their contributions, their respect and dignity and make it possible to negotiate a fairer distribution of the benefits for growth. Research on ways of empowering women continues to gain momentum yet the existing journals rarely capture the essence of the WEE vision and mission. The proposed journal will fill this gap and ensure that information on WEE is given the prominence it deserves.
